Not that long ago having a web site was the proper thing to do. Soon, blogs became the gold standard and everyone raced to put up their blog and began blogging. But that is now history, and new times are before us. All the talk at this point is about “Social Media” with Twitter and Facebook dominating the conversation. It’s the newest phase in online communication, it’s the newest phase in community, and as you might expect, it’s beginning to catch the eye of marketers too.

It’s amazing to see celebrities, politicians and famous names from @SnoopDogg to @AlyssaMilano to @JoeBiden to @PatrickWilson and beyond, are racing to establish themselves as part of the Twitter crowd.

But Twitter is much more incredible than that. What a lot of people do not realize is that Twitter is a local social tool too. More likely than not, your town government is on Twitter, your local TV and radio news, your local Fire Fighters, your local library, your local college, even the guy that mowed your lawn recently. If they are not on Twitter now, it’s just a matter of time.

But there’s another force moving rapidly to Twitter. It’s an undercurrent of a more serious nature whereby businesses and entrepreneurs are starting to tap the profitable potential of Twitter. When you observe successful companies like: @FordTrucks, @elischeesecake or @lacoste start lining up on the Twitter bandwagon, it’s without doubt time to take notice.

It is likely that this “business phenomena” boils down to the everlasting fact that a lot of business actually occurs in social gatherings, at cocktail parties, on the golf course, or at numerous other social events. Now, through Twitter it’s become possible, if not down right easy, to benefit from an online version of a non-stop cocktail party of incredible proportions.

The statistics and stories are incredible:

  • How powerful is a reTweet? “Social network users are 3 times more likely to trust the opinions of peers over advertising when making purchase decisions.” ~JupiterResearch
  • “Global Twestival used Twitter to raise over $250,000 as of February 2009 providing clean water for just over 17,000 people in Ethiopia, Uganda and India”
  • “Unique Visitors to Twitter are dominated by 2,935,000 in the 35-49 age range (41.7%)”
  • “Business owners age 30 to 39 are most likely to be using social media marketing (44.8%), followed by 20 to 29 year-olds (40.3%) and then 50 to 59 year-olds (38.7%).”

What does all this mean? It means that if you are an entrepreneur or own a business, you must go directly to Twitter, do not pass go, do not collect $200, and set up a free Twitter account.

Easy enough?

Well, not quite. Once you have your Twitter account opened, that’s when the for most people, the challenges begin. It’s a very very simple concept, but like playing poker, unless you know WHAT to do, you’re going to soon be scratching your head.

The good news is there’s help. Internet strategist and social media marketing expert, Dan Hollings has spent over a year researching and testing Twitter strategies for business. Along the way, Dan wrote 100 of the most popular Twitter tips found anywhere online. Next he created a toolbar for Mac or PC that places about 240 Twitter tools, tips and apps easily within reach. Recently, he released his remarkable Twitter training program called, “Twitter Twenius” (that’s Twitter-talk for genius).

Here is an interesting Twitter tip, to get your juices flowing:

Twitter accounts not used should still be completely set-up with Twitter wallpaper branded to you, links to your active Twitter pages, a proper “bio line” (which does not literally have to be a bio – rather, just an appropriate message), and preferably at least one post.

Of course there’s so much more to learn, but if you’re looking for the money in Twitter or a way to turn-on the Twitter afterburners within all your marketing campaigns from local to international, I highly recommend you check out Twitter Twenius.

Very Exciting Twenius Update:

There are strong rumours that Twenius will be included for free in the latest re-opening of of StomperNet, one of the most advanced Internet Training Memberships available today. If the rumours are true you will definitely want to consider joining the Internet Marketing elite over at Stompernet!

Another great guide to using Twitter with a small twist; it’s come from the UK government ;) You will often find guides on using Twitter written by and for business users, some of them a lot better than others. When you can get your hands on a fresh perspective like this it allows you to consider things that perhaps wouldn’t be covered in the typical business guide. Whilst it may not all be relevant to you it’s definitely a worthwhile read. [click to continue…]

Whilst researching for this project I came across a great slideshow from the self proclaimed viral marketing scientist, Dan Zarella. Rather than keep it to myself I decided to share it with everyone here in the hopes that it can help you. Whilst this slideshow mainly refers to the type of retweet that is created by directly copying a tweet within Twitter, you can actually use the insights within the slideshow to better structure the links you create with the ReTweet Graphics collection.
